This typical costume is the costume of a plague doctor. Plague doctors were assigned to examine if sick persons were stroked by plague or not. They wore these masks as protection because it was thought that plague was received by decayed air. Plague doctors usually weren’t real doctors because there were almost no real doctors who would do such a dangerous job. However bubonic plague isn’t able to spread through air or human contagion, the costumes these doctors wore possible did protected them against the fleas which carried the real bacteria.
